Zephyr Gallery
4th September 2007 till 30th of September 2007 Opening night Tuesday 4th of September 18:00 20:00
Melbourne Milliners invade the Docklands
With Melbourneís world famous Spring Racing Carnival just around the corner, Zephyr Gallery is proud to present a collection of artistic headwear by some of Melbourne's leading Milliners. We've all worn a hat of some shape or form at least once in our lives. Whether it's a school hat, sun hat, fascinator or even the good old Easter bonnet hats have played a large roll in Melbourne's fashion and culture for hundreds of years. For decades we've seen women with these extravagant pieces of artwork secured firmly to their heads at the races, now Zephyr Gallery is putting them on display for the month of September.
This flamboyant exhibition includes works for sale by top milliners including Richard Nylon, Marilena Romeo, & Waltraud Reiner. These handmade, colourful pieces are made from a variety materials sourced from all over the world.
Richard Nylon
Melbourne based milliner Richard Nylon has continually impressed with his innovative design concepts, and imagination. This creative approach to headwear has been witnessed over the last nine years whilst collaborating with clothing designer Gwendolynne. Nylon has been a prominent fixture in the fashion scene since 1985 where he regularly showed clothing and costume as part of the Fashion Design Council collection shows. Richard manipulates crinoline, straw, feathers & vintage veiling creating abstract form and pattern with his contemporary designs.
Marilena Romeo (The Mad Hatter)
Having a great passion for hats and glamour, Marilena has been educated by some of the most accomplished and experienced Milliners using methods developed by traditional skills along with her modern flair to not only create hats, but "works of art". As her company names suggests, Marilena likes to capture the fairytale aspect of millinery along with the romance. Marilena's designs have been in demand as far as Dubai and she has recently been invited to participate as a guest Milliner to exhibit her designs for the Dubai World Cup. Many of her creations have been featured on catwalks across Melbourne and are currently stocked exclusively for selected boutiques. Having a great interest in theatrical millinery, she has designed and created theatrical hats for performances. Her specialties include race-wear and after five.
Waltraud Reiner (Torb & Reiner)
Waltraud was trained by the Queen's milliner Rose Corey, in London in the 1980's and has also worked for Philip Somerville who counts the Dutchess of Kent, Margaret Thatcher, Joan Collins and the late princess Diana among his customers. As the 'juniorest junior' in the workroom, Waltraud found that just by being there and seeing what was going on was a lesson in itself. She is one of Australia's foremost milliners who uses her creativity to not only inspire her students, but to create amazingly striking hats for all occasions, including for the fashion frenzied Melbourne Cup and the Flemington Races.
The 'Art A Head' Exhibition will be open daily to the public from 2pm - 5pm, with champagne served upon entry to all weekend visitors. The launch of this exhibition coincides with International Hat Week with gold coin donations upon entry to go towards 'The Blue Hat Project', contributing to the national fund-raising efforts of Beyond Blue, to lift the hat on depression.
